Karşılarındaki inanılmaz güçlere sahip yaşam formları Mr. Spock'ın dahi zekasına durgunluk verecek güçtedir. Gerilim sadece uzayda değil, aynı zamanda geminin yeni komutakı Kirk'ü kabullenmekte güçlük çeken eski kaptan Williard Decker'in Atılgan'da bulunmasında da kendini belli eder. Sonunda gemi yenilmez düşman tarafından ele geçirilir ve dümenci Ilia rehin düşer.
